Saint Louis Art Museum

The Museum's Asian collection comprises spectacular works from across the vast continent of Asia, with particular strengths in the arts of East Asia.

Works from China and Japan

China is represented through important and comprehensive collections of ancient and later Chinese bronzes, Buddhist sculpture, painting and calligraphy, ceramics, textiles, and decorative arts. The arts of Japan are showcased through a superb group of folding screens, paintings, woodblock prints, lacquerware, as well as ceramics from ancient through contemporary periods.

Korean, South Asian, and Islamic Art

The growing Korean collection features excellent examples of ceramics, metalwork, and decorative art. There is a small but fine collection of South Asian sculptures and Himalayan art from the Hindu and Buddhist traditions, while Southeast Asia is largely represented through a range of textiles and ceramics. The collection of Islamic art is represented by a selective group of ceramics, metalwork, glass, manuscripts, and textiles from Arabia, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Turkey, and the Caucasus. Highlights include Iznik ceramics and tiles, Mughal and Persian manuscripts, and the renowned James F. Ballard collection of rugs.
